In 2026, I have been trying to figure out what direction that I wanted to take with my blog. Since I am a late bloomer and can relate to the term in all areas of my life. I am going to gear the blog towards those blooming later in life. Oprah Winfrey, Colonel Sanders, Vera Wang, and Ray Kroc were all late bloomers along with many other famous people. They hit success in their careers later in life. The benefits of being a late bloomer are that you have more gratitude, you have developed resilience, and you have more empathy for others.
You Have More Gratitude
If I had early success, I would have been grateful. However, when you have been working and grinding for this long, the level of gratitude will be on another level. The longer you wait to get to the next level, the more you appreciate it when you get there. When I got a callback for an Equity theater, I felt so grateful for the opportunity just to do the self-tape. Do you know how long I have wanted to work at a union theater as an actor? If you work on enjoying the process, you will reach your goals, but you just have to be consistent and stay in the game.
You have Developed Resilience
If you are a late bloomer, you have had the time to develop resilience. When things come to people quickly and more easily, they do not really have to develop resilience. But for a late bloomer, it is mandatory to recover more quickly when adversity is prolonged and consistent. Your resilience will also keep you in the race to build the life and dreams that you desire. You can do this! Use every ounce of resilience that you have developed over these years to find the success that you desire.
You Have More Empathy for Other People
When you have planned for all the things and you still had challenges and barriers along the way, you can give more empathy to others. Everyone does not have to struggle, but if everything has come easily for you, you expect that everyone else should be at the same level. When in reality, it is not always that simple. You can try extremely hard and still have failures and delays in life. After all that I have gone through, I will always give people grace because I want people to give me grace.
Conclusion
Did life go exactly as planned? No, since 2013, I have written my goals and actually posted them on my wall every year. Some goals were accomplished, I made some progress on others, and some were never reached. For example, I have been trying to reach my goal weight since 2018. I have lost 30 pounds over the years, and have maintained quite well this year, but beat myself up for not losing these last 20 pounds. I will reach my goal weight, but I also have to give myself grace too.
Push yourself, but give yourself grace too. Take inventory on what you are carrying and if you struggle with weight, you are probably carrying so much stress and heaviness in other areas. I recently realized this about myself. I carry so much alone or at least I have in the past, but maybe the more I find community more consistently, the more my weight will come off. Being a late bloomer has taught me gratitude, resilience, and empathy in a way that is priceless. Lastly, embrace your late bloomer status and continue working toward your goals and dreams.
